Symphony Orchestra of India
Martyn Brabbins, conductor

An NCPA Presentation

RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: Scheherazade, Op. 35
SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47

Martyn Brabbins returns to conduct the Symphony Orchestra of India for two concerts of the SOI Autumn 2025 season. Brabbins has been appointed as SOI’s Chief Conductor from January 2026.  Inspired by the tales of One Thousand and One Nights, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, one of the most beloved showpieces of the Romantic repertoire, is a lush, colourful orchestral suite that paints vivid scenes of exotic adventure and romance. Shostakovich’s Symphony No.5 written under intense political pressure during Stalin’s regime, is a powerful blend of personal expression and public statement, reflecting both suffering and resilience, making it one of the most enduring and deeply  moving works of the 20th century.
