Shostakovich: Symphony No. 10
Martyn Brabbins leads the SOI in a second compelling evening of drama, lyricism and emotional depth, joined by world-renowned mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly. The concert opens with Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, a vivid orchestral tone poem capturing the stillness of a windless sea and the hopeful surge of a ship setting sail. Mahler’s deeply personal Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer) follows, with Connolly bringing poignant expression to this early song cycle that traces a young man’s journey through love and heartbreak. The evening culminates in Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, a monumental work shaped in the shadow of Stalin’s death, blending brooding introspection with explosive energy and resilience.
