The Power of the Jazz Ensemble: Leadership, Interaction & Sound

An NCPA Presentation

This masterclass will focus on musical communication and artistic identity within the context of jazz. Participants will gain a deeper awareness of how jazz ensembles function as living, interactive systems—where leadership, trust and sound evolve moment by moment.

The masterclass will be conducted by Sorin Zlat, a pianist, clarinettist and composer from Romania, recognised as one of the leading jazz musicians of his generation. He made history in 2015 by becoming the first non-American to win the Grand Prix at the Great American Jazz Piano Competition in Jacksonville, USA.

Key topics include:

  • Leadership and group dynamics within a jazz ensemble
  • The relationship between the soloist and the rhythm section
  • Real-time musical communication and listening
  • Building a collective sound and defining artistic identity
  • Insights from the international jazz scene and professional performance experience

This masterclass is ideal for performers seeking to strengthen their ensemble skills, educators looking for new perspectives and anyone interested in the inner mechanics of jazz as a collaborative art form.

Fees: Rs. 1,000/- (Plus GST)
