Handel: Messiah
The Bournemouth Symphony Chorus joins the SOI in a performance of Handel’s time-honoured masterpiece, Messiah. Written in about three weeks, this extraordinary work is, without doubt, the most popular and most popularised choral work in the entire repertoire. Handel was not only defining the world of opera, the world of vocal arts and the world of singers, but inventing and experimenting with a new style – the oratorio. This style would allow him to tell a story, not with action and costumes, but with musical structure and form, yet using all the musical forces available to his operas. The result is a marvellous rendition of ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’ in a series of arias, recitatives and choruses. By the time Handel was at his peak, he had internationalised music for the first time in history – a German, writing Italian operas, with French-styled overtures, for London audiences. Messiah brings together all of these qualities and traditions in a masterful score. Do mark down the date, and don’t miss this choral feast right here in Mumbai.
This concert will run for approximately 120 minutes with no intermission.
