An NCPA Presentation
A Trio of Famous Overtures
In this series of talks on Western classical music, Dr. Cavas Bilimoria takes listeners through musical concepts, the lives of composers and their famous works, interspersed with examples of recorded music. The first talk this month explores three overtures of diverse styles and moods: Ludwig van Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No.3 from his opera Fidelio, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s brilliant depiction of the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet and Felix Mendelssohn’s happy recollection of his holiday in Scotland off the island of Staffa through the Hebrides Overture, also known as the Fingal’s Cave Overture.
