Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5
The second talk in September by Dr. Cavas Bilimoria will focus on Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, a work of profound emotional and musical depth, composed in 1937 when Joseph Stalin’s regime curtailed artistic pursuits in the Soviet Union. The symphony holds a sense of dissent in its four movements, traversing through a dramatic opening and a triumphant finale.
