Schubert: Symphony No. 8 (“Unfinished”)
This talk, the second in the series this month, explores Schubert’s Symphony No. 8. Why Schubert never finished the work has been an unanswered question in the world of music for over a century. The score includes two movements so remarkable that the moniker ‘Unfinished’ is all the more vexing. The final page of the second movement contains nine bars, followed by four blank pages. It was in 1960 that musicologist Christa Landon discovered a missing piece that ought to have come before the empty pages, containing bars 10 to 20 and then stopping abruptly. Dr. Cavas Bilimoria’s talk will further unpack the composition.
