An NCPA Presentation

Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 (Pathetique)

The first talk this month by Dr. Cavas Bilimoria will dive into Tchaikovsky’s sixth and final symphony, Pathétique, which when translated means passionate or emotive. The title captures the turbulent inner drama of the composition as well as the composer’s life towards its end. The symphony exhibits a moody darkness at almost every turn, with the exception of the exuberant third movement, which culminates into a sorrowful fourth. Despite the melancholic undertones, it is the piece that Tchaikovsky described many times in letters as “the best thing I ever composed or shall compose.”
