Today, microphones, loudspeakers and other allied equipment have become an inevitable part of any programme happening around the world. This also applies to recording studios.

Therefore, knowledge about the sound amplification (PA) system and techniques of recording is vital for people working in the field, especially practitioners of music. Conversely, the personnel who handle these systems also need to have an awareness about the nature of the music being presented, and the expectations of performers as well as the audience in terms of sound output.

With this objective in mind, a workshop is being organised in two parts. Manohar Kunte is a veteran sound engineer with a vast experience spanning over five decades. He conducts a professional training course in sound engineering at the Dept. of Music, Mumbai University.

In Part I, participants will get to understand different dimensions of sound as a medium of communication, and the manner in which it is perceived on and off the stage. Basics of recording techniques will also be dealt with from a musician’s point of view. Participants will be introduced to various equipment used: microphones, speakers, mixers etc. Part II (13th December) will be dedicated to the actual practice; offering participants hands-on experience concerning topics dealt with in Part I. Part II is aimed to enhance their skills for sound-check, recording etc.
