Utkarsh: In Reverence to the Maestro
The Multi-Textured Idiom Of Narrative Expression (Abhinaya) In Classical Indian Dance
Lecture-Demonstration by Mandakini Trivedi
An NCPA Presentation
Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Mandakini Trivedi has received her training in Mohiniattam under Dr. Kanak Rele at the Nalanda Nritya Maha Vidyalaya. She is the recipient of a Fellowship of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India for her research in Mohiniattam.
The abhinaya in Classical Indian Dance is a unique form of narrative & emotional expression. Quite different from expression in contemporary theatre and from expression in film /Cinema; it is a product of multiple inputs from structured movement (dance), music, poetry, mystical/philosophical thought and above all a Transcendental vision of sacred art that makes it operate at many levels.
A student of classical Indian dance unconsciously imbibes it as a whole quite unaware of the ingredients. The lecture-performance by Mandakini Trivedi will deconstruct the abhinaya in classical Indian Dance. The presentation will be relevant for all classical Indian dance styles.
