An NCPA Presentation

Recognised as the only gharana to have taken its roots in Mumbai, the Bhendibazar gharana was founded by three brothers Nasir Khan, Chhajju Khan and Khadim Hussain Khan who migrated from Bijnaur sometime in 1870. This style is marked with a languorous pace of rendition; open throated resonating voice production, delineation based on merukhand technique, and use of bewitching inflections as well as Carnatic ragas and lesser-known ragas. Trained by veterans like T. D. Janorikar and Naina Devi in classical and semi-classical music respectively, Suhasini Koratkar is the senior-most exponent of Bhendibazar gharana. Having worked as the Station Director for AIR, she has recorded and documented the rich heritage of this gharana extensively. As a performer, scholar and teacher, she continues to carry forth the legacy of the Bhendibazar gharana. This presentation will give a glimpse of some iconic compositions by eminent practitioners of this gharana: Aman Ali, Shivkumar Shukla, Ramesh Nadkarni, Master Navrang and Pandurang Amberkar.

Registration Fees: Rs.100/- at the venue
