Porgy and Bess is set in Catfish Row, a dockside area of Charleston, in about 1930. The plot depicts the story of Porgy, a disabled beggar living in the slums of Charleston, and his attempts to rescue Bess from Crown, her possessive lover and Sportin’ Life, a drug dealer. Following a brawl that leads to a murder, Crown flees, leaving Bess amongst a disapproving community. Porgy and Bess develop an unlikely relationship and Bess finally finds acceptance on Catfish Row – until a hurricane and the return of Crown change everything.
