Monday, 29th – 6.30 am to 10.00 pm

Ustad Allarakha (Abbaji) turns 100 on 29th April, 2019. On this day, we will celebrate in Mumbai with an all-day gathering of over 100 of the very finest musicians in classical and folk traditions as well as jazz and fusion styles. The morning will begin with a procession at 6.30 am, and, through the day, there will be performances at the Tata Theatre, the Experimental Theatre and video presentations in the Godrej Theatre, concluding with the evening finale in the Open Air Plaza with two stages. Since Ustad Allarakha’s humble birth in a small village near Jammu, this simple man of destiny has almost single-handedly brought the art of tabla-playing to the forefront of the musical canvas, not only in India, but all over the world. His creative vision has transformed the way drummers and musicians practice this art form today. Ustad Allarakha is universally recognised as the spirit of taal who, in a short span of time, changed the course of our musical history. “Allaji” to the world, “Abbaji” to all rhythmists on the planet: Happy 100th Birthday!
