Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943)
Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27

Symphony Orchestra of India
Martyn Brabbins, conductor

This performance was recorded live at Cadogan Hall, London, on February 25, 2019, as part of the SOI’s UK tour.

Martyn Brabbins, Music Director of the English National Opera (ENO) and the Huddersfield Choral Society conducts Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 as part of the SOI’s UK tour in 2019.
After his First Symphony received harsh criticisms, Rachmaninoff began to doubt his symphonic writing, despite the success of his piano concerti. Nonetheless, he pushed himself to complete the work and it premiered to great acclaim, earning him a Glinka prize. Alongside his piano concerti, the Second Symphony is one of Rachmaninoff’s best known works today.
