Chausson: Concerto in D major for violin, piano & strings, Op. 21
Mendelssohn: Concerto in D minor for violin, piano & strings, MWV O 4

Internationally-renowned violinist & founding Music Director of the SOI, Marat Bisengaliev will open the twenty-seventh season along with the Italian piano virtuoso Roberto Prosseda, playing the violin & piano concerti by Chausson and Mendelssohn.

“Never have I had such a success! I can’t get over it. Everyone seems to love the Concert.” Ernest Chausson wrote this joyous comment in his diary after the premiere of his Concerto in D major for violin, piano, and string quartet, Op. 21, in Brussels in 1892.

Mendelssohn, although he was only 38 when he died, managed to distinguish himself as one of the first significant Romantic composers of the 1800’s. Mendelssohn wrote his Violin and Piano Concerto in D minor for himself at the keyboard and his violin instructor and friend Eduard Rietz.

In 1998 Bisengaliev’s recording of the Mendelssohn Concertos (Northern Sinfonia) became Gramophone Critic’s Choice of the Year, while in 2014 Prosseda, a noted Mendelssohn specialist, completed his 10-year project of recording all of Mendelssohn’s piano works for Decca in 9 CDs.
