A gold medalist from the University of Delhi in Carnatic music, she also has the distinction of topping the University in M.Phil. She has been bestowed with numerous awards including the Kendra Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar, the Kerala Sangeet Natak Akademi award, and the Spicmacay Samman. She is an ‘A’ grade artiste of A.I.R in music and a ‘Top’ graded artiste of Doordarshan and has performed extensively at prestigious venues. She is empanelled in the ‘Outstanding’ category by the I.C.C.R. Through Trikala Gurukulam, an institution founded by her mother, Bhalla imparts training in both Carnatic Music and Mohiniattam to young aspirants.

Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya was established in the year 1973 by dancer, choreographer and academic Dr. Kanak Rele. It is the first exclusive college for dance education affiliated with a premier university in the country. The strong academic approach at Nalanda has created an ideal infrastructure, which includes highly qualified personnel, to conduct research in dance and the allied arts. Here research activities go much beyond analysis and investigation of technique and performance of dance; selected projects are aimed at enriching dance for the future by further development and spelling out its intended impact on human life and its usefulness to society. Uma Rele, Principal of Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya, is the proud torchbearer of these young cultural ambassadors and is paving the way for dance education.
