Umang is a platform for promising artistes. This month, we present Samrat Dutta and Renjish Nair.

Samrat Dutta is an eminent Bharatnatyam performer, teacher and choreographer based in Kolkata. Being a disciple of Padmabhushan Prof C.V Chandrasekhar, he has initially started his training under Guru Smt Thankamani Kutty. He has also been trained in Marga Natya under Guru Kalamandalam Piyal Bhattacharya. Being an empanelled artist of ICCR, a TOP Grade artist of Doordarshan and a Junior Fellowship holder of CCRT (Ministry of Culture, Government of India), Dutta has performed in many prestigious festivals throughout the nation. Presently running his own institution “Angamantra” in Kolkata, Samrat has undertaken his own creation and researched choreographic works which have the equivalent qualities of both the traditional and the experimental aspects of the art form.

Santanu Roy is a promising young Bharatanatyam performer, and teacher based out of Kolkata. He is a disciple of Samrat Dutta and has attended regular classes of Padmabhushan Prof. C.V Chandrasekar in Chennai. Roy completed Masters in Bharatanatyam from Tamil University, Thanjavur. He Has been awarded by the West Bengal State Music Academy Award, and Sanjukta Panigrahi Memorial Academy Award from Sri Arabinda Institute of Culture. He is an ‘A+’ Grade Bharatanatyam artist of Eastern Zonal Cultural Center (Ministry of Culture), and a graded artiste from Doordarshan Kendra Delhi. Santanu has performed in many prestigious festivals in India and abroad. He is the co-director and organizer of BANDISH ARTS, started along with Samrat Dutta to provide a platform to artistes who were affected by the pandemic.

Kathakali artiste, Renjish Nair, is a disciple of Guru Kalamandalam C. Gopalakrishnan. He has studied Kathakali at the basic, advanced and research levels under the guidance of Kalakshethram, Dombivli. He has been accredited as an “A” grade artist by Doordarshan, Mumbai and has performed at prestigious events all over India. These include Khajuraho Festival, Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, Upvan Arts Festival, Jaya Smriti, and Sangeet Natak Akademi Jodhpur to name a few. He has also won many national competitions and received many awards, including the Natvar Gopikrishna National award, Saptarang Kala Bhushan Award, Nrityashiromani Award, Narthaka Puraskar and many more. Additionally, he is a Chenda artist and a Carnatic music trainer.
