Alpesh Chauhan, conductor
Steven Isserlis, cello

Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier Suite, Op. 59
Schumann: Cello Concerto
Stravinsky: Petrushka (1947 version)

Rising star British conductor of Indian descent, Alpesh Chauhan, leads this programme that opens with Richard Strauss’ Suite from his opera Der Rosenkavalier. After the successful premiere of the opera in 1911, it became hugely popular and has remained the most often performed of Strauss’ operas. One of the most respected cellists of his generation Steven Isserlis joins Chauhan and the SOI in Schumann’s cello concerto.

The concert concludes with music from Stravinsky’s ballet Petrushka. The primitive nature of Stravinsky’s music captures the essence of the characters in the story – which dates from the 16th-century commedia dell’arte—who represent human emotions in their most raw form: Petrushka, who yearns for love; the Ballerina, the unattainable symbol of beauty; and the Moor, ill-mannered and symbolizing the bass aspects of humanity.

This event runs approximately 110 minutes including one intermission.
